The Homecoming Race
**The Homecoming Race**
Every year, the people of Eli's Native American community gather for the homecoming race. It is a special event filled with excitement and tradition. This year, Eli, a boy with a physical disability, decides to join the race. His grandmother, who tells stories of their brave ancestors, encourages him. “You can do it, Eli. Just believe in yourself,” she says.
On the day of the race, Eli feels nervous. Many runners are strong and fast. But he remembers his grandmother's words. As the race starts, he runs slowly but steadily. Suddenly, he finds himself next to a boy named Jake, who has always looked down on him. “You can't win, Eli,” Jake says with a sneer.
Eli takes a deep breath. “It’s not about winning, Jake. It’s about our spirit and our community,” he replies. In that moment, Jake stops running. Eli encourages him, “Let’s run together!”
They both start to run side by side. They feel the support of their community cheering for them. As they cross the finish line, they are not just competitors but friends. Eli smiles, knowing that the race was about more than winning. It was about connection and resilience.
